What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is dummy text used by designers, developers and publishers to show how a layout will look with real-looking content. It has been the printing industry's standard filler since at least the 1500s and became widespread in digital design with desktop publishing software in the 1980s.
The text comes from a scrambled passage of De finibus bonorum et malorum, a philosophical work by Cicero written in 45 BC. Words were cut and rearranged, so it reads like Latin but has no real meaning. That is the point: readers are not distracted by the content and focus instead on fonts, spacing and the overall design.
How this generator builds the text
The generator picks words at random from a built-in list of about 130 classic lorem ipsum words. Each sentence has between 6 and 14 words, starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop, and longer sentences sometimes include a comma for a more natural rhythm. Each paragraph contains between 4 and 7 sentences, and paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
When the classic option is on, the first sentence is always Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. In Words mode the output starts with those words instead, cut to your count. You can request up to 50 paragraphs, 500 sentences or 5,000 words at a time, and the text is generated in your browser using a secure random number source, so every click on Generate gives a different result.
How much placeholder text do you need?
Match the amount to the content the space will eventually hold. A paragraph from this generator averages about 55 words (5.5 sentences of about 10 words each), so three paragraphs come to roughly 165 words, about right for a short blog introduction or product description. If you need an exact length, choose Words and enter the target, then confirm the total with the word counter. For headings, buttons and navigation labels, a few words or a single sentence usually work better than a full paragraph.
