Lower the weeks per year to exclude unpaid time off. Results are gross pay before tax and deductions.
How to use the Salary to Hourly Calculator
- 1Enter the pay amount, such as an annual salary or an hourly rate.
- 2Choose whether that amount is per hour, day, week, month or year.
- 3Adjust hours per week, days per week and weeks per year if your schedule differs from the defaults of 40, 5 and 52.
- 4Read your hourly rate and the daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and yearly equivalents.
How to convert salary to an hourly rate
Divide the annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. With a standard 40-hour week and 52 paid weeks, that is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours. A salary of 50,000 therefore works out to 50,000 ÷ 2,080 ≈ 24.04 per hour.
The calculator first converts whatever you enter into a yearly figure, then divides it back out. Daily pay is yearly ÷ (days per week × weeks per year), weekly pay is yearly ÷ weeks per year, bi-weekly is twice the weekly figure, and monthly pay is yearly ÷ 12.
Example: 50,000 a year
On 40 hours a week, 5 days a week and 52 weeks a year, a 50,000 salary equals about 24.04 an hour, 192.31 a day, 961.54 a week, 1,923.08 every two weeks and 4,166.67 a month.
Going the other way, an hourly rate of 25 on the same schedule equals 25 × 2,080 = 52,000 a year. A quick rule of thumb is to double the hourly rate and add three zeros, which assumes 2,000 working hours, or 40 hours a week for 50 weeks.
Paid and unpaid time off
Salaried employees with paid holidays are paid for all 52 weeks, so leave weeks per year at 52. If you are a contractor or hourly worker who is not paid for time off, reduce the weeks to the number you actually work. For example, if you take two unpaid weeks, set weeks per year to 50. A yearly target of 50,000 then needs an hourly rate of 25 rather than 24.04.
Freelancers often aim higher still, because they cover their own equipment, insurance and quiet periods. Working out how much a rate change means as a percentage is easy with our percentage calculator.
Monthly vs bi-weekly pay
Monthly pay is not the same as four weekly payments. A year has 52 weeks, so a month averages about 4.33 weeks, and monthly pay is the yearly figure divided by 12. Bi-weekly pay arrives 26 times a year, which means two months each year contain three paychecks.
When budgeting for a loan or rent, use the monthly figure. You can then compare it with the payment from our mortgage calculator, or see how a regular monthly saving could grow with the SIP calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How many working hours are in a year?
With 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, there are 2,080 working hours in a year. With a 37.5-hour week it is 1,950 hours, and with 35 hours it is 1,820. Change the hours per week field to match your contract.
Is this before or after tax?
All results are gross pay, before income tax, social security and other deductions. Your take-home pay will be lower, depending on where you live and your personal circumstances.
Why does the days per week setting only change daily pay?
Hourly pay depends on total hours, and weekly, monthly and yearly figures do not depend on how those hours are spread across the week. Days per week only affects how much you earn per working day.
How do I compare a job offer paid hourly with a salaried one?
Enter each offer with its own period and schedule, then compare the yearly figures. Remember to account for paid time off, overtime rules and benefits, which can make a lower salary more valuable overall.
Can I use this for part-time work?
Yes. Enter your actual hours and days per week, for example 20 hours over 4 days, and the calculator converts your pay accordingly.
